Ballad of Old Man Aaron
From the podcast: Return of the Wandering Jew
forty years since the kids have grown
now I’m stuck here growing old
these four walls are like a prison
nobody come round anymore
so today I read my paper
and today I made my bed
taped a note up to the window
by the time they find it I’ll be dead
if I could I would go softly
but the lonliness and empty days
will make you lose you mind
my sweet wife has gone before me
soon I’ll be laying down by her side
so I open up the car door
and I sink behind the wheel
though I know I won’t be going far
I make sure that the tank is filled
to those who care I say I’m sorry
to those who care I say goodbye
I can hear the pastor calling me
to the flock up in the sky
if I could I would go softly
but the lonliness and killing time
can make you lose your way
all my friends have gone before me
I think I’ll be seeing them here today
so as I sit here on the corner
see the trucks go passing by
I know one push upon the pedal
no more waiting around to die
if I could I would go softly
but the lonliness and empty days
can make you lose your mind
my sweet wife has gone before me
soon I’ll be laying down by her side
soon I’ll be laying down by her side
